Protect Your Seed Phrase (Self-Custody Basics)

Updated July 21, 2026·5 min read

What it is

A seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase, is the list of 12 to 24 words your self-custody wallet shows you when you set it up. Those words are a human-readable version of the master key that generates every private key in the wallet. With them, you can restore the whole wallet on any compatible device.

This write-up is about one thing only: protecting that phrase. It is not advice about what to acquire, hold, or trade. It is the security discipline that keeps the master key to a self-custody wallet out of the wrong hands.

Time & frequency

A few minutes at wallet setup, then an occasional check that the paper copy is safe and private.

How to do it

  1. 1Understand what the phrase is before you touch it. Those words are the master key. Anyone who reads them can rebuild your wallet and control everything in it, from any device, anywhere, with no way to reverse it.
  2. 2When your wallet displays the phrase during setup, write it down by hand on paper, in order, in clear handwriting. Do not screenshot it, photograph it, or type it into a note, a message, or a website.
  3. 3Keep it off anything connected to the internet. No cloud drive, no email draft, no password manager entry, no photo library. An online copy is a copy an attacker or a hacked account could reach.
  4. 4Store the paper offline in a private spot only you know about. Consider a fireproof or metal backup so fire or water cannot destroy it.
  5. 5Never share it with anyone, for any reason. No real support agent, wallet app, giveaway, or 'verification' page will ever need it. Anyone asking for it is trying to take the wallet.
  6. 6Never type it into a website or a pop-up. You only ever re-enter a seed phrase directly into your own wallet when you are restoring it, never into a browser prompt that asks you to 'sync' or 'validate'.

Why it works

Self-custody means the wallet does not hold your assets; the blockchain does, and the seed phrase is what proves the wallet is yours. Whoever holds the phrase can regenerate the private keys and control the wallet, with or without the original device. There is no support line that can undo it and no password reset. That is the whole trade of self-custody: full control in exchange for full responsibility for one secret.

Because the phrase is the entire security model, protecting it comes down to a single idea, which is to keep it offline and private. Every convenient place you might be tempted to stash it, such as a photo, a cloud note, or a text to yourself, is a place that malicious code or a thief could read. A handwritten copy in a private spot simply has no online attack surface.

Common mistakes

  • Taking a photo or screenshot of the words. Your photo library often syncs to the cloud automatically, which quietly puts the master key on someone else's server.
  • Saving it in a notes app, an email, or a password manager. Anything on an internet-connected device is reachable if that device or account is ever compromised.
  • Typing it into a website or pop-up that asks you to 'verify' or 'restore' your wallet. Real wallets never ask for it that way, and that is the classic wallet-draining scam.
  • Keeping the only copy where fire, water, or a curious visitor can reach it. One fragile slip of paper in an obvious drawer is a single point of failure.

Practice it now

Audit where your phrase lives

Two minutes to make sure your master key is not sitting somewhere online.

  • Search your photos, notes, email, and cloud drive for any copy of your recovery words. Finding one means the phrase has been exposed to the internet and can no longer be treated as a secret; the standard fix is to set up a brand-new wallet with a fresh phrase.
  • Write the phrase by hand on paper, or on a metal backup, in order, and store it somewhere private that is protected from fire and water.
  • Say the rule out loud so it sticks: never type it into a website, never share it with a person, never store it online.
